The Moon' orbit is tilted at an angle 6.7 degrees to the Earth equator and has an eccentricity of 0.055. Because of this eccentricity, the Moon is not always at the same distance from the Earth. As revolves around the Earth with period of 27.32 days, the Moon changes apparent size in the sky. During solar eclipses, the nomn blocks light from the Sun: the difference in total and annular eclipses is based on the distance of the Moon from the Earth. In an annular eclipse the Moon is farther away from the Earth, thereby appearing smaller so that it is not completely able to hide the Sun.
